Project Description

Santropol Roulant is a volunteer-run community organization that uses food as a vehicle to break social and economic isolation between generations and cultures. Serving up meals since 1995, Santropol Roulant’s programs and activities help connect young people with those living with a loss of autonomy (like people with disabilities and seniors) with healthy food and regular social interactions.

In consultation with seniors and other community members with mobility issues, the organization will be use its Barrier Buster grant for construct an elevator and accessible washroom and install automatic doors. These upgrades will allow community members of all abilities to attend activities and events on-site.

Project Team Q&A

  1. Why did you decide to break down barriers in your community?

We are committed to making our space accessible because we work closely with community members who have various levels of mobility. Our space must be accessible so that members of our community feel safe and welcome in our building. Adding an elevator and accessible washrooms will mean that anyone who wishes to access our space, including our rooftop garden, will be able to do so. Having an accessible building means that we are better able to serve our community.

  2. How is this project going to make a difference in your community?

This investment in our physical space will allow us to increase our impact. The project will ensure that our clients, mainly seniors living with a loss of autonomy and/or mobility issues, are able to access our space without having to face barriers as a result of inaccessible infrastructure. Being able to navigate our space as a result of accessibility improvements means that ALL of our community members can engage in our community events and activities with autonomy and dignity.

  3. What’s the best thing about being a Barrier Buster?

The best thing about being a Barrier Buster is that we can serve as a model for other organizations in our community, city, and province. Acting as a trailblazer, we can show others how to make essential changes to better serve our community and shine light on the importance of making spaces accessible while open up discussions about ability and mobility.
