Run by volunteers, the Milford Recreation Association (the only community hall in the county) provides recreational facilities to 22,000 local residents in the community. Many of the Association’s visitors are seniors with mobility issues.
The Association will use its Barrier Buster grant to install a new wheelchair accessible ramp and platform at the main entryway to the hall, construct a parking area with ramp access, and evenly pave the lot’s surface and mark out accessible parking spaces. These changes will create an inclusive entrance that all visitors can access independently.
Many years ago, we made the conscious decision to include accessibility as part of our mandate. We looked at our facilities and wanted to improve by expanding it to include full accessibility at our community hall. Having a fully accessible main entrance allows us to be invite ALL users from the community into our space.
Currently, wheelchair users must enter through a separate rear entrance and must have someone present to open the door and help manoeuver over the two-inch door jamb. With the new deck, ramp and parking lot, all visitors will finally be able to enter together through same entryway, and wheelchair users will be able to enter independently.
Having the opportunity to see our mandate for accessibility being realized is very exciting. The Barrier Buster Grant has allowed us to achieve our goals of making our entranceway fully accessible much sooner than we would have anticipated. Thank you for providing this funding and continuing to do the work that does make a difference in every community, and in particular, our community of Milford!
