The Mariners Centre is a multi-purpose facility that hosts sporting events, concerts, exhibitions, trade shows, conferences, and more in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The Centre strives to be accessible and to provide a safe environment for all visitors.
The facility currently shares sledge hockey equipment with two other regional arenas, none of which are considered sledge friendly. This Barrier Buster project will help make the Mariners Centre safely accessible for sledge players, making it a true community centre; one that offers services for everyone.
The Mariners Centre is a regional sports and recreation facility. Two years ago, we participated in an adaptive recreation equipment loan program and received a number of sledge hockey kits to be shared between three arenas. The interest shown by the community highlighted the deficiencies in our arena around accommodating athletes of all abilities. We pride ourselves in being a true community centre, and improving access is always a priority. This a step in the process of becoming fully accessible.
The will not only enable us to promote the sport locally, but will afford us the opportunity to host provincial, national and international competitions. The Mariners Centre has hosted major events for hockey and curling, and will now be able to host sledge hockey events. Hosting this kind of major event will further promote the sport locally and encourage community participation.
The best thing about being a Barrier Buster is the feeling that we are making our community a better place to live. By making our facility sledge-friendly, we are showing community members with disabilities that they are welcome and that they belong.
